President William Ruto has announced 4,000 paid internship opportunities for Kenyan graduates under the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).

Speaking during the launch of the programme on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the President highlighted the initiative as a key step toward empowering young professionals while supporting national development.

Ruto said the interns who are graduates from the universities and TVET institutions will help in scaling up the work that has been done in AHP.

“We are bringing in an additional 4,000 young professionals—fresh graduates from our universities and TVET institutions. They will work alongside you and your firms, and with us, to strengthen supervision and accelerate the implementation of the Affordable Housing Programme.

“That entire space needs more hands—people with knowledge and expertise—so we can grow a larger pool of professionals to support and implement this programme,” he said.

Ruto said the government will hire 4,000 graduates to join the Affordable Housing Programme, where they will be placed under the supervision of professional firms already working with the state.

“We have many plumbers, many carpenters, many electricians, and many others in related fields entering the job market. At the same time, we have a large number of young people out there yearning for something to do,” Ruto said.

“Architects and engineering graduates will join your planning and design teams, which are already working with us. Quantity surveyors and economists will assist in cost estimation and value engineering, while lawyers and planning interns will support documentation, especially in generating sectional titles—since every unit now requires its own title deed.”

This announcement follows a July 2024 notice from the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development, which advertised 4,000 internship positions for lots under the supervision of professional consultants contracted by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development (SDHUD).

The Affordable Housing Programme is an initiative aimed at constructing 200,000 homes across Kenya.

In addition to creating housing, the programme is generating opportunities for young professionals in the built environment and related sectors.

Competent graduates in Land Surveying, Communication and Branding, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) are also encouraged to apply.

The internship will run for a period of twelve (12) months.

Interested and qualified candidates are urged to apply through the portal www.ahpjobs once the applications are apen. The interns will be remunerated according to the terms outlined by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

Notably, interns working under registered professionals will be required to maintain work portfolios, which will contribute to their professional examination and registration.

Upon successful completion of the internship, participants will receive both a testimonial and a certificate.
