According to Ruto, youths in Kwale have faced long-standing accommodation challenges that have affected students across the region.
The President has also unveiled a series of development projects in Kwale County, focusing on education, trade infrastructure expansion, and rural electrification to boost livelihoods and economic activity.

The initiative is part of the construction of 3,600 hostel units across universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, and Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campuses.
“We are constructing 3,600 hostel units across universities, TVET institutions, and KMTC colleges in Kwale County to provide our students with a dignified and conducive learning environment,” said Ruto.
The project is also expected to support rising enrolment in tertiary institutions by ensuring that infrastructure growth keeps pace with increases in the student population. Improved accommodation is seen as a key factor in enhancing student welfare and academic performance.
Student Sponsorship for Skills Development
In addition to infrastructure expansion, the head of state announced a sponsorship programme targeting 260 students from the region.
The beneficiaries will undertake short technical courses at Lungalunga Technical and Vocational College, with support from a KSh5 million allocation.
The programme is designed to equip young people with practical, job-ready skills that can improve employability and support self-reliance. The short courses are expected to focus on competencies aligned with local economic needs, particularly in technical and vocational fields.
“We will also sponsor more than 250 students from the area to undertake short courses at the college at a cost of KSh5 million, as part of our commitment to empowering the youth with practical skills,” added Ruto.
