President William Ruto has given a Ksh720 million cheque to Jua Kali artisans from Kibera to support affordable housing projects during the Mashujaa celebrations in Kwale Stadium.
President Ruto handed over the check on Sunday, October 20, 2024, to the contractor and the chairman of the Jua Kali Association in Kibera. Following the handing over of the cheque the Kibera Jua Kali artisans are tasked to do doors and windows. The money is estimated to benefit about 300 artisans.
The exercise indicates the President’s dedication to affordable housing projects as Kenya aims to solve the housing problem across the country.
The program aims to benefit individuals with affordable housing units for different income groups.
Ruto on Affordable Housing
Speaking at the event, the President in his speak expounded on affordable housing citing its importance in providing decent housing for those living in insecure settlements.
“The affordable housing program is central to these efforts with a target of delivering 200,000 homes annually to meet the growing demands of housing,” Ruto cited.

He further, reiterated, “This initiative aims to tackle the deficit that has left many Kenyans living in insecure, unsanitary, and poorly constructed dwellings. Also, fostering the growth of sustainable communities and generating jobs and opportunities across many other sectors.”
Furthermore, he noted that the future is urban. 60 percent of our population not only in Kenya but globally will be living in urban areas affirming that, that is not a choice we can make but what is exactly going to happen.

Affordable Housing Bill
On March 19, 2014, President Ruto signed the Affordable Housing Bill into law. During the signing ceremony, President Ruto said that the implementation of the Affordable Housing Programme will transform the lives of Kenyans at the bottom of the pyramid by creating jobs, providing decent housing, and reducing agricultural land fragmentation.
Speaking at State House Nairobi after appending his signature to the Bill, the Head of State commended the National Assembly and Senate for working round the clock to pass the Bill.

“I want to appreciate Parliament and Kenyans for their input in the Bill that I have just signed into law,” said President Ruto.
Moreover, he pointed out that the housing program will ensure families across the country live in a dignified manner. Lands and Housing Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome at the time of signing the bill said that the project had employed 120,000 people, adding that 300,000 people would be working in various construction sites across Kenya by the end of the year.
