Safaricom on Tuesday, January 23 announced a service disruption affecting paybill payments through M-PESA.
The company said the technical team is working to restore the services adding that it will inform the customers once the paybill payments are back.
“Dear Customer, we are experiencing a recurring service intermittency affecting some PayBill payments. The issue is under resolution by our technical team, we shall inform you once normal services resume,” read the notice.
This comes after customers complained that some M-PESA services including bank transfers have been down since Monday, January 23.
“Many Kenyans are lamenting that most banks to M-PESA transfer services have been down for almost 12 hours now. No update from Safaricom whatsoever,” said Cyprian, Is Nyakundi.
Others also said they can’t access other Safaricom services including purchasing tunukiwa offers.
Customers operating business said the M-PESA disruptions was affecting their daily operations.
“24 hours later Safaricom we are still waiting for you to resolve the problem with mpesa-bank transfer. Biashara itafanyika namna gani?” said Kamoh James.
According to some customers, the M-PESA disruptions on Monday also affected the purchase of Kenya Power tokens.
“I’m I the only one who can’t buy Kenya power tokens? Is the problem Mpesa or kplc? Safaricom and Kenya power deserve the incompetency award,” tweeted Goodie.
Safaricom responded to these complains stating that there was a technical hitch some money transfer transactions.
“Our apologies for the inconveniences caused. We are aware of the technical hitch affecting some M-PESA transactions and we are working on resolving it as soon as possible,” tweeted the Company.

M-PESA Paybill Payments Restored
In a statement at 7:29pm, Safaricom informed the customers that the technical issues affecting paybill payments on Monday had been restored.
The Company further said it will continue to monitor the services closely.
“We experienced service intermittency with PayBill payments that resulted in some transactions not being completed on M-PESA.The technical issue has since been resolved and we continue to monitor the services closely. We apologize for any inconvenience that this disruption may have caused,” read the statement.

KPLC Tokens
In a statement on Monday, January 22, Kenya Power Limited Company (KPLC) said a technical hitch that affected prepaid customers using M-PESA to buy tokens.
KPLC assured customers that its technical team was working to resolve the issue and allow resumption of tokens purchase.
“The responsible team is working to resolve the technical glitch and we expect to resume as soon as possible,” wrote Kenya Power.
Kenya Power advised customers to use alternative means of payment including Equitel, Airtel Money, and the Kenya Commercial Bank
“Customers are advised to use alternative vending channels including Quitel, Airtel Money, and KCB Bank.”
M-PESA suffered another hitch on January 9 when the Company said it was undergoing routine maintenance.
