Safaricom has launched a program meant to empower youth living with disabilities with scholarship opportunities to study software engineering.
In a press statement dated November 22, 2024, Safaricom unveiled the program saying that it will improve the employability of young Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)
“Safaricom has unveiled a tech re-skilling program to train young Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in digital skills to improve their employability,” read the statement in part.
According to Safaricom, the initiative is part of the efforts meant to promote inclusivity by embracing developments in the digital world.
Details of the program
The program that is currently in a pilot phase entails a 23-week software engineering training program at Moringa School. During the program, the trainees will be coached and mentored to equip them with the skills they need to excel in the sector.
Speaking at the launch, Safaricom’s Chief Human Resources Officer Nyokabi Florence said that Safaricom is keen to grow the number of people with disabilities in its workforce.

“Currently, persons with disabilities make up 3.3% of our workforce, and we are keen to grow this number to 3.5% through such re-skilling initiatives,” said Nyokabi
Safaricom will achieve inclusivity through the program
The initiative follows in the footsteps of the IT Bridge Academy that offered young job seekers with disabilities who have a passion for IT a chance to train and gain hands-on experience in the sector.

According to Safaricom, the re-skilling program forms part of its effort to achieve diversity, equity and inclusion.

“The training program is part of Safaricom’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts to ensure that inclusivity is woven into every aspect of the organization, cutting across attracting, retaining and developing employees to ensure the organization engages with customers and the broader community,” read the statement in part.
Earlier this month, the telecommunication company announced it recorded a 14.1 per cent growth in net income for its Kenyan unit to Ksh 47.5 billion in the six months ending September 30,2024. It also recorded a six per cent growth in monthly active customers to 35.3 million this year.
