Several people are feared dead after a landslide occurred at the Kimende escarpments in Kiambu County.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the tragedy happened on Tuesday, May 14, at around 7 PM.
Initial reports from the Kenya Red Cross indicated that several individuals were feared trapped under the debris.
“A landslide has occurred in the Kimende Escarpments of Kiambu County. Several people are believed to be trapped. The Red Cross Action Team is en route to the scene,” the Kenya Red Cross said.

According to the report, the landslide occurred in the Matathia area of Lari Constituency, following heavy rains in recent weeks.
In a video seen by The Kenya Times, some of the victims can be heard screeming for help as locals walked around with torches to locate and rescue them.
Kimende Landslide Update
In its latest update, the Kenya Red Cross declared the area a danger zone and restricted the movement of the locals.
Further, the Society said several people were missing, but the exact number of victims was yet to be confirmed.
“The area has been cordoned off and declared a danger zone. Although no fatalities have been confirmed, several people remain unaccounted for,” the Kenya Red Cross said.

Mathare Collapsed Building
The tragedy happened a few hours after a building collapsed in Mathare North area 1, within Nairobi County.
Kenya Red Cross reported that unknown number of individuals were trapped under the building that collapsed during demolition.
“A building undergoing demolition has collapsed in the Mathare North area 2. There are fears that multiple individuals may be trapped beneath the rubble. Our rescue team has been dispatched,” stated Red Cross.

The multi-agency team rescued four people who were trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building.
Three out of the four rescued were taken to a nearby health facility, while one with minor injuries was treated at the scene.
