Four people were rescued after a three-storey building which was being demolished collapsed in Fuata Nyayo estate in South B, Nairobi.
According to reports, rescue efforts were still underway, and the emergency rescue team had cleared two floors of the building.
Reports indicate that the incident happened on Monday, May 20, at around 3pm and a number of youths were present at the scene.
The Kenya Red Cross initially said one person had been rescued and two people were still trapped in building.
The Emergency rescue said operations are ongoing to save the two trapped inside the building.
“One person has been rescued, while two others are suspected to be trapped after a building being demolished collapsed in Fuata Nyayo, South B, Nairobi. Rescue efforts are ongoing,” the Red Cross said in a statement on X.
Police Statement on South B Collapsed Building
Makadara Police Commander Judith Nyongesa said an unknown number of people were cutting scrap metals in the building and could be trapped.
Nyongesa mentioned that the cutting of the metals from the floor of the building could have prompted the incident.
The police boss was leading a multi-agency rescue operation that included the Kenya Defence Force, the Red Cross, and the Nairobi County Government who were conducting rescue operations at the scene.
The building was demolished as part of the removal of structures on Ngong River’s riparian land in the Mukuru-Fuata Nyayo slum.

Recent Similar Incidents
The incident occurred less than a week after another building scheduled for demolition collapsed in Mathare North area 2.
In the incident that happened on May 14, Kenya Red Cross said unknown number of individuals were trapped under the rubble.
Four casualties who were trapped under the rabble were rescued and transported to a nearby hospital.
Three individuals sustained critical injuries, while one other person sustained minor injuries.

Besides, a five-storey building that collapsed in Uthiru along Naivasha Road on May 7.
Red Cross reported that the Espsom Apartments located near the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) collapsed at around 8: 30p.m.
Nairobi County later revealed that all residents of the collapsed building had been accounted for.
