Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale’s son has recounted the final moments of Gloria Sekeiyan Khalwale, the legislator’s third wife who passed away on Saturday, August 15.
Speaking during the funeral proceedings on Friday, August 21, the last-born child, Stephen “Kapten” Khalwale, described the distressing morning when the family rushed her to hospital after she developed breathing difficulties.
Kapten said they were preparing to attend a bullfighting event on Saturday morning when his sister came running to alert him that their mother was not breathing properly.
He initially thought she was alerting him about another incident involving cattle rustlers, which he said had previously affected the family.
However, the situation became clear when his sister arrived crying and told him to rush to their mother’s house.
“When I saw her at the window, at first I thought it was another case because at home we have been having cases of cattle rustlers,” Stephen recalled.
“She told me, ‘Come on, rush, they’re calling you. Mama is not breathing well’.”
Stephen said they found their father, Senator Boni Khalwale, attempting to resuscitate Gloria before the family rushed her to hospital.
“I rushed to the house and found our father trying to resuscitate her. I quickly started the car, called my brother Eugine, and we went to the hospital,” he said.

According to Stephen, Gloria appeared responsive during the journey, particularly as they drove near Sigalagala, giving the family hope she would survive.
He said doctors continued efforts to save her after they arrived at the hospital, but the family received the news of her death soon after.
Stephen described the news of her death as devastating, saying the family was left in a sombre mood after receiving confirmation at the hospital.

He also reflected on childhood memories with his stepmother, recalling when he first met her in Nairobi in 2006 and how she used to prepare brown porridge for the children.
He said Gloria remained a major influence throughout his life, including during secondary school.
One day, he recalled, Khalwale’s late wife attended his Form Four Annual General Meeting when he felt he had gone off track and encouraged him to focus on his studies.
At the time, her encouragement helped him regain focus and eventually pass his KCSE examination.

Stephen also revealed that Gloria was the last person he spoke to on Friday before he left for home.
The two discussed an upcoming Linda Mwnanchi rally that was scheduled to take place in Homa Bay on Sunday.
“Actually, she was like a Redington to me, and I was her servant,” Stephen said, describing the close relationship they shared.
