Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has responded to critics labeling his rehab program a “PR exercise” after a video surfaced showing former journalist Kimani Mbugua roaming the streets while allegedly abusing drugs.
In a video posted on his X platform, Sonko dismissed claims that he had neglected Kimani Mbugua, calling the allegations false.
“I saw I was tagged in a video showing Kimani Mbugua roaming the streets, and I was asked if the rehabilitation program I took Kimani to was a PR exercise. What kind of PR case involves taking someone’s child for a full year or two, enrolling them in rehab, where they receive medication and treatment from doctors, and then calling it PR?” Sonko said angrily.
At the same time, the former governor urged the families of individuals he has enrolled in various rehabilitation centers across the country to take responsibility for helping their loved ones avoid relapse.
“Even the families of these patients—you have a role to play, and so do their friends. Most of these cases involve people from the media fraternity, your former colleagues. What role are you, as friends, playing? After we’ve done our part and the patients have returned to society, what role does the family play after discharge? Let’s stop the blame games,” Sonko added.
Mike Sonko Denies Neglecting Kimani Mbugua
Additionally, Sonko said he spoke to Kimani Mbugua’s father, who requested him to bring Kimani back to rehab of which he agreed to.
The former Nairobi Governor also said that he will take back former NTV journalist Nasibo Kabale to rehab, who relapsed recently.

This is not the first time Sonko has taken ex-citizen journalist, Kimani, back to rehab.
Kimani Mbugua to Return to Rehab
Earlier this year, Sonko pledged to take personal responsibility for ensuring that Kimani returns to a rehabilitation center for continued care.
“I will take it upon myself to ensure that Kimani returns to the rehabilitation centre for continued medical care. Kimani Mbugua’s mum and sister, tafadhalini nirengesheeni yeye. I will handle his situation, and he will be fine,” Sonko assured.

Sonko’s remarks at the time came after Kimani’s father discussed his son’s progress on Obinna’s live show on January 20, 2025.
Former Nairobi governor expressed disapproval, stating that airing matters concerning Kimani’s health on a live show was unnecessary.
