“I had the distinct honor of being unanimously elected as the Patron of the Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk transport cooperative union of Kenya nationally,” Sonko said.
Sonko warned that he will not allow cartels and criminals to infiltrate the sector.

He said his administration will restore order in the bodaboda sector and flash out cartels.
“To the cartels and criminals who have infiltrated the boda boda industry and engaged in criminal activities, be aware that we shall come for you,” he said.

He pledged to address the issue of cartels using the sector to steal from Kenyans.
Sonko said the cartels constitute less than 2 percent of the total membership.
“We won’t allow a few criminals to tarnish the name of this good industry. I shall be dedicated to restoring order and sanity within this sector.”
Sonko assured that his administration will apply a strong, disciplined, and professional approach to service delivery in this important transport industry.
The union brings together all the other Sacco and associations countrywide under one umbrella and it boasts a membership exceeding 2.5 million individuals.
“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the leadership of the union for the confidence they have placed in me and my ability to lead, and I commit to advocating for their rights,” he said.

Additionally, Sonko said he will sit down with the steering committee and find how they can import spare parts.
He also urged other riders who are not in the SACCO to join so that they can work together to improve the sector.
“We are going to champion and fight for your rights globally,” he said.
Sonko also asked the members to ensure there is gender balance in the leadership of the sacco.

Challenges Facing the Sector
The members said boda boda riders are being arrested, some killed, and their motorcycles taken but no leader is addressing the issue.
Some of them said they have pushed Sonko to become their patron since he has the heart and guts to lead them.
“You will get anything you want in Kenya because you have juts joined the third level of government,” one of the members said.
