Students Join Lecturers in Strike Ahead of Exams

University students have joined their lecturers on strike ahead of their Monday exams. The Technical University of Kenya (TUK) has been paralysed by the strike.

According to a source who has spoken to the Kenya Times, university students are set to join their lectures on strike which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, January 30 2025.

The strike comes after warning from the management  which urged the staff and students to attend to their duties.

“We would like to inform all the staff and the student fraternity that the semester examinations will be taking place from Monday 3rd February, 2025 to Saturday 15th February, 2025 notwithstanding the industrial action called by the staff Unions of UASU, KUSU, and KUDHEIHA Workers.

Consequently, all staff members are obligated to perform their duties diligently and ensure that the examination process remains uninterrupted.

The University remains committed to safeguarding the fundamental rights and welfare of all staff and students while ensuring the smooth delivery of academic programs and institutional operations,” read the letter from the Vice Chancellor Professor Benedict Mutua.

TUK University Students to Join their Lecturers on Strike

Earlier this month on Friday January 17 2025, The Vice-Chancellor (VC)  addressed concerns regarding salary delays four days after lecturers at the institution went on strike due to the delayed payment of December 2024 salaries.

In a notice, Prof. Mutua reassured staff that the government was taking action to resolve the issue, emphasizing that all staff salaries will be disbursed without further delays.

He acknowledged the challenges faced by staff and emphasized the importance of measures put in place to stabilize the university’s financial situation.

“We understand the inconvenience this delay may have caused, and we sincerely appreciate your patience.

Your dedication and commitment to your responsibilities are highly valued,” said the Vice Chancellor.

Technical University of Kenya Staff Strike

The students’ and lecturers’ strike follows a protest by TUK staff on Tuesday, January 14, after issuing a notice to the Vice-Chancellor informing him of the demonstration.

The purpose of the protest was to present petitions and memoranda to the National Assembly, the Ministry of Finance and National Treasury, and the Ministry of Education.

Elsewhere, UASU Secretary General Constantine Wesonga issued a seven-day strike notice on January 16, citing several unresolved grievances.
