U.S. President Donald J. Trump has been awarded the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, South Korea’s highest national honor, by President Lee Jae-myung during a state visit that combined diplomatic symbolism with strategic messaging.
The award was presented by President Lee Jae-myung at the Gyeongju National Museum on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, marking the first time a sitting American president has received the prestigious decoration.
Trump Honored in Asia
The honor, named after South Korea’s national flower, the Mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon), is typically reserved for Korean presidents and foreign heads of state.
Trump’s reception featured full state honors, including a 21-gun salute, a military band playing “YMCA”, and a red-carpet reception.
President Lee praised Trump’s role as a peacemaker on the Korean Peninsula, citing his historic summits with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his first term.
“This honor reflects our appreciation for your efforts to open dialogue and promote peace in the region.”
Trump became the first U.S. president to receive the decoration, which includes a gold medal, a sash, and a laurel-emblazoned pendant symbolizing peace and prosperity.
A Crown for a President
As a powerful symbol of goodwill, President Lee presented Trump with a replica of the Cheonmachong gold crown, a lavish relic from Korea’s ancient Silla dynasty (57 BC–935 AD).
The original Cheonmachong crown, unearthed in 1973 from a royal tomb in Gyeongju, is considered one of the most extravagant relics of the Silla dynasty, known for its long period of peace and cultural flourishing.
The replica, encased in glass, was described by South Korean officials as representing the divine connection between the authority of the heavens and sovereignty on Earth and was chosen to reflect Trump’s perceived role in ushering a “golden age” of the Korea–U.S. alliance.
Trump, visibly pleased, admired the crown and medal, remarking, “It’s really beautiful. I’d like to wear it right now.”
The honors came as part of a broader diplomatic effort to ease tensions between Washington and Seoul over trade.
Trump-South Korea Talks
Trump has been pressing South Korea to commit $350 billion (Ksh45B) in U.S.-controlled investments, a demand that has met resistance from Seoul due to concerns about economic stability.
South Korean officials have proposed a hybrid package: $200 billion (Ksh26 B) in phased cash payments and $150 billion (Ksh19 B) in shipbuilding investments, including loan guarantees and equity stakes.
Despite the lack of a finalized agreement, Trump expressed optimism.
“We made our deal — pretty much finalized it,” he said during a dinner with regional leaders.
However, no official documents were signed, and both sides acknowledged that key structural details remain unresolved.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged that while progress had been made, “a lot of details” still needed to be resolved before a formal agreement could be signed.
Trump’s visit to South Korea was the final leg of a three-nation Asia tour that included stops in Malaysia and Japan, where he secured substantial investment pledges.

His next major engagement is a high-stakes meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan, where trade, fentanyl control, and semiconductor exports are expected to dominate the agenda.
No Kim Jong Un Meeting
Despite widespread speculation and President Trump’s repeated expressions of interest, a fourth summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un did not materialize during the South Korea leg of Trump’s Asia tour.
Trump had earlier stated he would be “100 percent open” to meeting Kim, even suggesting he was willing to extend his stay in South Korea to accommodate such a meeting.

However, North Korea did not respond publicly to the overtures, and no logistical preparations were made for a summit at the Demilitarized Zone, where the two leaders last met in 2019.
The absence of a meeting came amid heightened tensions, with North Korea test-firing sea-to-surface cruise missiles in the Yellow Sea just hours before Trump’s arrival.
