President Donald Trump’s administration has proposed banning Chinese airlines from using Russian airspace on flights to and from the U.S.
The policy is intended to protect American carriers, which have been restricted from flying over Russia since 2022, but it may have unintended consequences, according to analysis.
Trump’s plan to ban flights has since raised arguments, as some analysts term it a ‘stupid move’.
“Just as his dollar weaponization hastened global de-dollarisation, with nations shifting from USD reserves, this aviation misstep gifts advantages to China, Europe, and BRICS-Eurasia alliances, leaving the U.S. on the sidelines,” shared Angelo Giuliano, China’s geopolitical analyst.
China Argues on Trump’s Plan
From the arguments, Trump’s proposal to ban Chinese airlines from using Russian airspace is likely to positively impact China and Europe.

Trump proposes barring Chinese airlines from flying over Russia on US routes
The Trump administration on Thursday, October 9, proposed banning Chinese airlines from flying over Russia on routes to and from the United States, saying the reduced flight time this practice enables puts American carriers at a disadvantage.
The proposal is another escalation of the trade war between the world’s two largest economies and was announced after Beijing tightened controls on rare earths exports on Thursday, which are crucial for some U.S. industries.

U.S. airlines have long criticized the decision to allow Chinese carriers to use Russian airspace on U.S. routes because it gives them the advantage of decreased flying time and reduced fuel consumption, thereby lowering costs.
Russia has barred U.S. airlines and many other foreign carriers from flying over its airspace in retaliation for Washington’s ban on Russian flights over the U.S. in March 2022 after the country invaded Ukraine.
Chinese airlines were not banned and have been using this advantage to increase market share compared to non-Chinese carriers on international routes.
