Two people were electrocuted to death while attending a ‘Disco Matanga’ event in Homa Bay County.
The two died on the spot, while another person sustained injuries during the event at a nightclub in Ragama Estate, Oyugis Town
The young men, including a minor identified as Antipus Odongo and an unidentified adult male, died on the spot during the 2 a.m. incident.
They were dancing in an open field inside the nightclub when the electrocution occurred.
Disco Matanga Turns Deadly as Two Electrocuted in Homa Bay
Oyugis West Sub-Location Assistant Chief Warren Omollo confirmed that the two met their death after accidentally stepping on a live generator wire while dancing in the rain inside the nightclub.
According to Warren, the two young men, along with a lady who survived with injuries, stepped on a naked wire that was being used to power the music system, killing the men instantly.
The administrator added that the woman sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
At the same time, Rachuonyo South Sub-County Police Commander Philemon Saera confirmed the incident, stating that the club manager, the owner of the disco, and the person who hired him were summoned for questioning.
The bodies were taken to Rachuonyo South Sub-County Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

This comes after two people were killed in a funeral night vigil, also popularly known as ‘Disco Matanga,’ at Ichengo Market in Butula Sub-County, Busia County, on January 2, 2025, despite the government’s ban on such night vigils.
A middle-aged man, identified as Jotham Oduor, was attacked and killed by a mob after being accused of stabbing Naman Ochieng Auka, 23, from Lubanga Village, Matungu Sub-County in Kakamega.
The irate mob is reported to have dragged the suspect from his house at Ichengo to Siribo Primary School, where Auka was murdered, before beating him to death in retribution.
The Price That Comes with Disco Matangas
Disco Matangas often attract teenagers from both within and outside the village or counties, with some walking long distances to attend the events.

The teenagers have taken advantage of the events to engage in immoral behaviours that have negative consequences.
Many end up engaging in risky behaviours, such as unprotected sex, illicit alcohol consumption, smoking bhang, and using other harmful drugs.
Another alarming trend is the involvement of teenagers in criminal activities.
Some attendees are armed with crude weapons like machetes, axes, pangas, and swords, leading to violent confrontations and, in some cases, the formation of groups for revenge.
These weapons are sometimes used to break into homes, shops, and farms, further contributing to the growing concerns around the safety and behaviour of young people at these events.
