The landmark Old Mutual Towers in Nairobi caught fire shortly after a magnificent New Year’s fireworks show that lit up the city’s skyline.
The display was part of the cross over celebrations to the new year 2024.
Onlookers were both excited and afraid as they were immersed in loud music and lights shortly after the New Year’s Eve celebrations began.
However, images and videos of fire burning part of the building surfaced on social media minutes after the display.
Additionally, the videos showed a thick black smoke rising from the building, and flames of fire blazing atop the landmark building.
Notably, the video was also captured by live news coverage by local and international media who were reporting new year’s celebrations across the world.

Old Mutual Towers Responds to Reports of The Fire
In a subsequent post, Old mutual confirmed the incident and assured that the fire had been contained.
According to the building’s management, the incident occurred at the balcony of the top floor of the building but was immediately contained.
“We acknowledge there was a minor incident after the New Year Fireworks celebration at the Old Mutual Tower. This was on the balcony of a top floor and it has since been contained.
“We thank all our celebrants for the notifications, and we wish you all a Happy 2024,” the statement read in part.
Cause Of Fire and Casualties
The building’s management, however, did not disclose the exact cause of the fire incident.

Reacting to the turn of events, social media users voiced their speculations that the fire was caused by fireworks, with some pointing to lack of enough preparedness.
At the same time, no casualties were reported in the midnight incident in Nairobi.
Also, authorities assured that investigations were underway to dissect the surrounding and the event to ensure the safety of such events and festivities in the city, in the future.
