The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a Nairobi man accused of impersonating a police sergeant and extorting members of the public.
In a statement on November 5, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect, identified as Augustine Mjomba Mwadime, was arrested by officers from Jogoo Road Police Station at DC Stage following a public tip-off.
“A tip-off from members of the public has ended an impersonation and extortion scheme on Jogoo Road, Nairobi, with police arresting a man posing as a police officer before his deception could continue,” the DCI said.
Fake Police Credentials and Handcuffs Recovered from Suspect
According to the DCI, members of the public had raised concerns about a suspicious man who was allegedly extorting people while pretending to be a law enforcement officer.

When police confronted him, Mwadime introduced himself as Sergeant Augustine Mjomba Mwadime and claimed to be attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) Training School in Embakasi.
However, his claims were put to the test, with a subsequent search exposing what investigators described as an attempt to create a false police identity.
A search led to the discovery of a fake police appointment certificate with a bogus service number, as well as handcuffs and two keys that the suspect allegedly carried to reinforce his false identity.
“Recovered from him was a forged certificate of appointment bearing a fake service number, alongside a pair of handcuffs and two keys, an assortment of props intended to make his impersonation more convincing,” said the DCI.
DCI Previously Arrested Man Posing as Traffic Police Officer in Bank Robberies
The latest arrest comes days after the DCI reported the arrest of another man suspected of impersonating a traffic police officer to rob customers after they withdrew money from banks.

In a statement dated October 29, the DCI said detectives from the Operation Action Team (OAT) and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) arrested Muia Mutune, also known as Fredrick Mbuta, in Embakasi Village following investigations into a series of robberies targeting unsuspecting bank customers.
According to the investigative agency, the suspects allegedly used traffic police uniforms to stop and approach victims shortly after they left banking halls.
By dressing like traffic officers, the suspects allegedly exploited the public’s trust in law enforcement to gain access to their targets before robbing them.
The DCI said intelligence gathering and forensic analysis enabled detectives to identify four suspects believed to be connected to the robberies. Mutune was among those identified during the investigations.
His arrest followed an earlier apprehension in April in connection with similar incidents although he was released on bond in July, with detectives continuing to pursue leads linking him to the reported robberies.
Investigations led officers to Embakasi Village, where they traced and arrested him. He was subsequently held in custody as detectives prepared him for arraignment.
The DCI said efforts were still underway to track down the other suspects believed to have participated in the robberies, with the agency urging continued cooperation as investigations progressed.
