The family of the late former minister Maina Wanjigi has announced the name of the children’s home that will be receiving the funeral contributions.
Through the local dailies, Wanjigi’s kin called on anyone seeking to contribute for the funeral arrangements to forward their donations to SOS Children’s home.
According to the family, the late Wanjigi was the pioneer and patron of the children’s home. This may be associated with the decision to have funeral funds chandelled to the home.
“He was the pioneer and patron of SOS children’s Village (Kenya),” noted the family
Wanjigi’s family further provided the MPESA Paybill number where well-wishers would send their contribution.
“Kindly channel all donations to SOS Children’s home, MPESA Paybill No. 551100 with the account number “Account No. 551100 Maina Wanjigi,” reads part of the statement.

SOS Children’s Home is one of the world’s largest non-governmental organizations, focused on supporting children without parental care and families at risk.
It is located at Marcus Garvey Road, Off Argwings Kodhek, Hurlingham, Nairobi Kenya.
Maina Wanjigi Death
Maina Wanjigi who is the father of politician Jimmy Wanjigi died on June 28 while receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.
Wanjigi who was born in Wahundura village in Murang’a County died aged 92.
While announcing his death, the family described him as a distinguished leader, statesman, philanthropist and innovator.
“Maina Wanjigi was a distinguished leader, statesman, philanthropist and innovator who made profound contributions to Kenya and beyond,” read the newspaper obituary.

Further, the family noted that the funeral ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 3rd July 2004, at 12 pm at All Saints Cathedral.
The burial is scheduled for Friday, 5th July 2024, at 10 am in Karya Estate, Nyeri County.
Career of the Former Minister
Maina Wanjigi landed his first job as an assistant agricultural extension officer in Nyeri District before entering politics.
Born in 1931, he gained prominence after independence when President Jomo Kenyatta appointed him as Kenya’s first Director of Settlement. In this role, he helped settle many landless citizens, overseeing a large resettlement scheme.
Wanjigi’s political journey started with the 1969 Kamukunji Constituency by-election after the assassination of Tom Mboya.
He later became an assistant Minister of Agriculture and then chair of Kenya Airways.
With President Moi’s restructuring in 1983, Wanjigi took on the role of Minister for Tourism and Wildlife, working towards the goal of attracting a million tourists to Kenya by 1988, achieved only in 2010.

He later served in the Ministries of Public Works and Housing, as well as Cooperative Development. During his tenure, thepolitician played a key role in establishing cooperative societies and launching the Cooperative Bank of Kenya.
The political genies eventually returned to the Ministry of Agriculture, where he had started his career, showcasing his dedication to public service and development.
