The weatherman on Tuesday, October 10 listed parts of the country that should expect rain this week ahead of the much-anticipated El Nino.
In a statement, the Kenya Meteorological Department – KMD said the Western Kenya, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Central Highlands, South-eastern lowlands, Coast, and North-eastern Kenya will experience rainfalls.
“Some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Coast, the South-eastern lowlands and North-eastern Kenya are likely to receive rainfall,” read the statement in part.
According to the forecast, most places will receive rain at intervals. Some regions will experience rain at night while others will have morning or afternoon showers
Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Busia, Migori, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and West-Pokot Counties will mostly experience afternoon rains although some areas will have occasional rains in the morning and at night over the weekend. The mornings are expected to be generally sunny.

Similarly, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi Counties are expected to experience the same rain as the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin. However, it would be cloudy in the morning.
“Occasional cloudiness is expected in the morning giving way to sunny intervals. Afternoon showers are likely to occur in a few places. Nights are expected to be partly cloudy though showers may occur over few places during the second half of the forecast period,” the statement said.
Rain in Semi-Arid Areas
Turkana and Samburu Counties are also likely to experience morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms may occur over few places over the weekend. However, days are likely to be sunny and nights partly cloudy.
Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo Counties are expected to have sunny days and partly cloudy nights. However, morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers may occur over a few places before the end of the week.
This would be the same in the Mombasa, Tana-River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties.
“Days are likely to be sunny and nights partly cloudy. However, occasional morning and early afternoon showers may occur over a few places during the second half of the forecast period,” the statement read.
El Nino is coming – Weatherman
Earlier, the weatherman announced that the El Nino rains would hit the country from October to December 2023.
Consequently, the government set aside funds to prepare for the El Nino rains. For instance, the Tharaka Nithi County Governor Muthomi Njuki banned tea and allowances for the county employees to save for the El-Nino rains.

“We have to revise our budget and see some of the things we can eliminate like traveling allowances, lunch allowances and some departments can do away with tea,” he said.
Similarly, the chairman of the Nairobi County El Nino task force had announced plans by the county government to purchase motorboats, rafts and inflatable boats to help in the disaster management during the El Nino rains within the month of October.
