The Ministry of Environment has issued a weather advisory after the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) warned of strong winds and large waves set to affect at least 15 counties across the country.
The advisory issued on Thursday, May 22 stated that the severity of the strong winds and waves will be moderate to high with the probability of occurrence being moderate (between 33% to 66%).
Counties set to be affected include Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale.
Strong southerly winds of more than 30 knots (15.4 m/s) are expected over the Coast, the South-eastern lowlands and Northwestern Kenya on Friday, May 23.
KMD predicts strong winds and large waves
According to Kenya Met, the wind speed is expected to strengthen to more than 35 knots (18.0 m/s) on Saturday and Sunday.
“Wind speeds are likely to reduce to 25 knots (12.9 m/s) on Monday, 26th May 2025. Wave heights are likely to be more than 2.0 meters over the Kenya coastal waters from Friday, 23rd May 2025 to Sunday, 25th May 2025,” read part of the advisory.

In addition, the winds are expected to reduce to below 2.0 meters on Monday.
Residents in all the mentioned areas have been advised to be on the lookout for potential gale (very strong winds) and large waves over the Indian Ocean.
KMD warned that strong winds may blow off roofs and cause structural damage while large waves may lower visibility and affect marine activities.
In its five-day weather forecast for the period from May 20 to May 24, Kenya Met had predicted continued rainfall in several regions of the country.
Kenya Met Lists Regions to Continue Expecting Heavy Rainfall
The weatherman said that rain is expected to continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Coast, and North-Western Kenya.

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, which includes Nairobi County and surrounding areas such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi Counties, KMD predicted that the mornings will be cloudy with occasional sunny intervals and a chance of rain in a few places.
Showers are on the other hand expected in the afternoons and during the night. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 27°C, with minimum temperatures going as low as 6°C.
Additionally, heavy rainfall is anticipated to continue in the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
These counties are expected to experience morning rains in some areas throughout the forecast period, with showers and thunderstorms expected to be received in the afternoons. During the night, occasional showers are expected in some places.
In addition, maximum temperatures in these regions are forecasted to reach 29°C, while minimum temperatures are expected to drop to 10°C.
