The Matatu operators have applauded the government for reducing the cost of fuel. On October 14, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced fuel price reductions for the period between October 15 and November 14, 2024.
Based on the reduction the Matatu operators celebrated the news as it served as a boost to the transport sector. While the operators have appreciated the slight reduction in fuel prices, they are further urging for deeper price cuts ahead of the December festivities.
In a social media post on November 5, 2024, Narok Line Services Limited director expressed gratitude to the government for the recent fuel price reduction, stating, “We thank the government for lowering fuel prices by a few shillings. However, we urge the government to consider further reductions so we can lower fares for our passengers during the December festive season.”
He added, “As we enter a busy period, any additional price cuts will greatly benefit those travelling to join their families for the holidays, as it will make it more affordable for everyone, including families with children, to travel together.”

NTSA to Curb Unroadworthy Vehicles this Festival
At the same time, the Narok Line director highlighted several vehicles on the road that are not roadworthy. In addition, he called on the National Transport Service Authority (NTSA) to be on the lookout during this festive session to avoid accidents.
He further pointed out that vehicles such as the Voxy, Noah, and Box lack the necessary authorization permits, Term Plan with Return of Premium (TROP), and speed governors.
Owing to the above information on the given vehicles, he fears that the customers’ lives will be endangered in case of accidents since they may not be held accountable without the mentioned documents.
“We are urging all vehicles to fulfil all the requirements including fixing the speed governors,” he stated.

Accidents During Festive Season
The holiday season can be overwhelming and prone to accidents if not carefully managed. This is the time of year when many families embark on road trips to reunite with their loved ones after a busy year of work.
People travel long distances to connect with family, which increases road congestion and the likelihood of collisions. At the same time, the festive season often sees an uptick in alcohol consumption, with some individuals driving after drinking.
These factors, along with numerous other activities, can significantly heighten the risk of accidents on the road. Therefore, the director of Narok Line’s plea for more safety measures should be given serious consideration.
