County Employees Go Months Without Pay
This comes after it was revealed that thousands of county government workers across the country are struggling, with some going up to three months without pay, a crisis blamed on delayed Treasury disbursements.
In July, the Treasury did not send an equitable share to counties, according to the Exchequer. Counties rely heavily on these equitable shares to pay salaries, fund development projects, and settle bills owed to contractors.
A similar situation is unfolding in Tana River County, where workers have not been paid for the third time in a row.
The County Public Service, Administration, and ICT executive, in a memo sent to employees, said the delays have been caused by the protracted implementation of the 2025/2026 budget.

In Taita Taveta County, more than 3,000 employees remain unpaid for July and August salaries. In Turkana and Trans Nzoia, staff have also gone for two months without pay.
Kisumu county workers are still waiting for their July and August salaries.
Meanwhile, county workers missed out on a Ksh 4.77 billion salary increase that would have seen each employee take home an average extra annual pay of Ksh 21,081 in the year to June 2025, as governors cited lack of cash to implement a Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) decision.
