The government on Friday, February 17, released Ksh3 billion to pay Community Health Promoters (CHP) across the country.
Speaking during the release ceremony at his Official Residence in Karen, Nairobi, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua commended the 107,000 CHPs currently working under the program.
He described them as hidden heroes spearheading a program essential to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
“You play a critical role in the success of UHC, and you are critical pillar in this intervention of primary health care. You are the unsung heroes having worked for many years without any administration thinking about you and your welfare,” the DP said.
“The Community Health Promoters are part and parcel of Kenyans communities, they are everywhere, offering critical services,” the DP added.
According to Gachagua, the purpose of the stipend was to acknowledge and encourage the critical role played by CHPs in the grassroots.

Leaders present
The event was graced by Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha, Chairperson of National Assembly Committee on Health, Dr Robert Pukose, top government officials and other partners.
Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa was also present at the function. In his speech, Ndegwa reiterated Safaricom’s commitment to supporting the Ministry of Health in actualizing the universal healthcare plan.
According to the Safaricom CEO, each health promoter will receive a smartphone and customized kits to enhance their delivery.
The devices are equipped with an electronic community health information system (E-CHS) designed to allow the workers gather health data from local communities.
“Safaricom is committed to support the Ministry of Health and the whole programme,” said Mr Ndegwa.
The World Health Organization was also represented by Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo who commended the Kenyan government for employing the community health promoters and providing them with stipends.
According to him, the payment will guarantee the program’s survival.
Community health promoters are trained to offer services including immunizations, treatment of common ailments, nutrition education, and pregnancy care.

At the function, the Deputy President also touched on the achievements that the government has made, among them the reduction the maize flour prices which he noted had dropped to the lows of Ksh139 per 2kg packet, down from Ksh230 in 2022.

“President Ruto found a debt of Kesh 9 trillion. But all the national debts are on course and the government has met its obligations to lenders. Planning stage is over and 2024 is the year to start feeling positive effects of good economic planning and management. You will start appreciating the good effects of good planning,” he stated.
Regarding the Kenya Shilling’s performance in the foreign exchange market, the DP stated that President Ruto’s sound leadership had contributed to the local currency’s stability compared to the US dollar.
“Those hoarding dollars should release the currency as they stand to lose a lot. The shilling is gaining stability,” he said.
