Police officers arrested two women in Kwa Nyunyi village County, Makueni County for burying a one-day-old baby who was found alive.
The area assistant chief, Francis Kaluma said he received information from neighbours that the woman identified as Mwongeli Kisui, had given birth and buried the baby.
Kaluma rushed to the homestead, ordered the family to exhume the child’s body and they found the baby alive.
“I was informed that a woman had delivered and buried her baby alive. I went there and demanded to know where the baby was buried. When they exhumed the body, we were shocked to find the child still alive,” Kaluma said.
How the Incident Happened
According to reports, the woman identified as Mwongeli Kisui gave birth at her sister’s home on Friday around 9a.m.
Mwongeli is said to be a single mother of two and she had given birth to a third born child.
Later, her mother, Kanini Kisui, came to the home, picked the foetus, carried it to a riverbed of River Ikolya before digging a shallow grave and buried it.

“When community mobilized themselves and pressured the family to reveal what happened they took us together with the area Assistant Chief to the site where we found the baby alive but breathing with difficulties. Remember the huge sand that had been placed on top. The placenta was still intact,” one of the witnesses said.
The baby was immediately rushed to Sultan Hamud Hospital for medical attention.
Unfortunately, the child succumbed to injuries on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
The body is being preserved at the same Sultan Hamud hospital morgue.

Mother & Grandmother Arrested
Police arrested the child’s mother and grandmother, and they are currently detained at Salama Police Station.
The two are awaiting arraignment in court to face charges related to the death of the infant and the illegal burial.
“One person, the sister to Mwongeli was released while Mwongeli and her mother, Kanini are still held at Salama police station waiting to be arraigned at Kilungu law courts today (Monday),” said Kaluma.
