Russian President Vladimir Putin met with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China on Monday, September 1, 2025.
Putin stated that the conflict in Ukraine remains an ongoing subject of discussion.
He emphasized that the conflict must come to an end soon and that peace should be restored.
We have been continually discussing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It must be resolved as soon as possible, and a path to lasting peace must be found swiftly.
During the plenary session of the SCO summit, Putin mentioned that he had reached an agreement with US President Donald Trump during the Alaska summit in August to seek a resolution to the Ukrainian crisis.
Putin Thanks China & India
Putin thanked China and India for their efforts and proposals aimed at resolving the Russia-Ukraine war.
In this regard, we highly appreciate the efforts and proposals from China and India aimed at facilitating the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis. I would also note that the understandings reached at the recent Russia–U.S. meeting in Alaska, I hope, also contribute toward this goal.

Modi also addressed the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
He highlighted the importance of peaceful efforts and urged the two nations to meet for continued mediation.
“We welcome all the recent efforts for peace. We hope that all parties will move forward in a constructive manner. A way must be found to end the conflict as soon as possible and establish lasting peace. This is the call of all humanity,” Modi said.

Russia-India Relationship
Modi stated that India and Russia have always stood by each other, even in the most challenging times.
Additionally, he said that their close cooperation is not only vital for their peoples but also crucial for global peace, stability, and prosperity.

Modi Calls for End to the War
In a statement, Modi also mentioned that they discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, fertilisers, space, security, and culture.
We exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. Our Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership remains a key pillar of regional and global stability.
Importance of the Meeting
Putin and Modi travelled together for the bilateral meeting after the plenary session of the SCO Summit in Tianjin.
Their meeting was significant, occurring days after Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, raising the total duties to a steep 50%, in retaliation for India’s continued purchases of discounted Russian oil.
Putin is scheduled to travel to India in December for summit talks with Modi. talks with Modi.
