Uganda is collaborating with researchers from the United States to develop treatments for cancer and diabetes.
Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni announced that he welcomed a team of American researchers on August 25, 2025.
Museveni stated that the researchers are working with Ugandan scientists to develop advanced treatments for cancer and diabetes, leveraging Uganda’s abundant plant resources.
Today at Nakasero, I met with a team of American researchers who are partnering with us to develop innovative treatments for cancer and diabetes derived from our plants. I welcome them.
Ugandan Doctor Develops Cancer Treatment
The meeting follows the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granting and publishing a patent to Ugandan scientist Dr. Matthias Magoola for a novel cancer treatment using guided Ribonucleic acid (RNA).
Dr. Magoola is the founder and managing director of Dei BioPharma, a pharmaceutical and biotech company.
The firm specialises in developing and manufacturing innovative medicines and vaccines in Wakiso District, Uganda.
This invention, years in the making, marks a significant advancement in cancer therapy.
It utilises a new composition of guided RNA attached to the Cas9 protein.

These complexes target and disrupt mutated genes responsible for cancer, preventing their repair and ultimately killing the cancerous cells.
Magoola stated that the invention aligns with his vision of eradicating cancer worldwide.
He explained that the development took several years and represents the first treatment for cancer using a novel composition of guided RNA attached to the Cas9 protein, known to disrupt mutated genes that cause cancer.
The USPTO requested him to submit an approval plan to the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) in March.
“All details of the manufacturing process have been completed and are ready for testing,” he said.

Museveni to Support Dei BioPharma
Museveni held a meeting with Dr. Magoola in April, during which he was updated on Dei BioPharma’s projects.
In a statement after the discussions, Museveni expressed his satisfaction that Dei BioPharma has filed over 100 patents with the United States Patent Office.
These patents cover treatments for various diseases, including cancer, HIV, Alzheimer’s, malaria, TB, and diabetes—some of which have already been granted.
The government will support his company in obtaining the necessary accreditation to acquire licences for locally producing drugs for global markets.
