The government of Ukraine will start supporting Kenya with food after a meeting held between President William Ruto and Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
The meeting, held during the UN Conference on Financing for Development and focusing on food security, saw Prime Minister Shmyhal reveal plans to support Kenya with food supplies.
“An important topic is food security… Russia is stealing Ukrainian grain, deliberately attacking our ports and grain storage facilities. This poses a direct threat not only to African countries but to the entire world,” stated the Ukrainian Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister stressed that Ukraine remains a crucial contributor to global food stability despite the ongoing war with Russia.
Kenya to Enjoy Food Supply from Ukraine
On his part, President William Ruto noted that Kenya is eager to work alongside Ukraine to tackle food security challenges and explore how Kenya’s strategic geographic position can be leveraged as a gateway for distributing essential commodities across the region.
“We are also keen to address food security challenges together and to explore how Ukraine can leverage Kenya’s strategic location to facilitate the regional distribution of key commodities,” said President Ruto.

Additionally, President Ruto said Kenya remains committed to strengthening diplomatic ties with Ukraine for the mutual benefit of its citizens.
During the talks, Kenya and Ukraine explored practical steps for deeper cooperation. Some of the key areas discussed included potential agreement on economic and trade cooperation, development of agricultural processing capacity, and establishment of logistics and grain distribution hubs.
In addition, the two leaders discussed ways of enhancing food security in Kenya and the region.
Other Discussions Besides Food Security
The leaders also discussed launching exchange programs between universities and expanding partnerships in digitalization, information technology, and space research.
The Ukrainian Prime Minister and President William Ruto reaffirmed their shared resolve to promote regional and global stability through peacekeeping, mediation, and multilateral diplomacy, underpinned by a strong commitment to the United Nations Charter and a rules-based international order.

Kenya is a major trade partner for Ukraine in East Africa. In 2021, Ukraine exported $162 million worth of goods to Kenya, primarily semi-finished iron, wheat, and hot-rolled iron bars, while Kenya exported $12.5 million, mainly tea, tropical fruits, and cut flowers.
