Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has launched a new police unit meant to protect water facilities.
The Water Protection Unit (WPU) which was launched on Monday, January 30 falls under the Administration Police and will include officers from Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU), who will address emerging security concerns.
According to a brief from the Ministry of Interior seen by The Kenya Times, the decision to establish the WPU was arrived at following the need to avert criminal activities affecting critical water infrastructure.

“Upon deliberation by the Ministry of Water and the National Police Service (NPS), a need was identified to provide armed security and protection to critical water facilities,”
“The criminals may greatly derail water resources in up to 34 counties under the water works development agencies,” the brief from the Ministry read in part.
The WPU is tasked with protecting and safeguarding National Government infrastructures and vital installations.
Addressing the press and security stakeholders during the launch of WPU, Deputy Inspector General of police Noor Gabow stated that the number of officers who will be sent to the different locations across the country under the new unit would depend on the need.
“And just like other police units within the National police service, it will be headed by a commandant,” Gabow said.
