A Kenyan content creator, Dr. David Opar, has spoken about his family history of early deaths, stating that many relatives have died before the age of 45, including his parents and sibling.
In his narration, David Opar said he is 37 years old, while his only surviving brother is 44, expressing concern about a perceived pattern of shortened lifespans in his family.
He described living with constant fear about not reaching 45 years, linking this anxiety to his personal family experiences.
“Half of my family is dead, and none of them reached 45 years old. I’m now 37 years old. My brother is 44 years old, my only surviving brother. I have a constant fear every day if we’ll make it beyond 45,” he emotionally narrated.
David Opar noted that he has not seen any immediate family member live beyond that age, which has influenced his outlook on life and health.
He also reflected on his family life, including past struggles with infertility and a miscarriage before having children. He referred to his children as “rainbow babies” and emphasized his commitment to prioritizing them.
Opar stated that the situation has led him to prioritize family time over career demands, choosing to be present for his children despite professional pressures.
He added that these reflections have shaped what he considers most important in life.
“How many more years do I have with my little ones? Instead of struggling to choose between my work and them, I’ll choose them. I prayed for them day and night. We had many years not having kids. We had a miscarriage along the way. These are our rainbow babies, so I will be there for them. If no one in my family has reached 45, maybe at most I have eight more years to go. Maybe at most my eldest brother has one more year to go, so I’ll spend it with them,” he said.
David Opar Shares Emotional Account of Bereavement and Family Loss
Narrating, David Opar recounted the death of his brother, stating that the news came shortly after the birth of his child. He said he received a message confirming his brother had died, describing the moment as deeply shocking and emotionally overwhelming.
He explained that the news caused him to stop all activity as he struggled to process the loss. Opar said he broke down completely and was unable to control his emotions for the first time in a long time.

“I got the most shocking, the saddest message. Sam is dead. And that only meant one thing. Everything had to stop. My body couldn’t move. I just broke down. I completely broke down. This was, I would say, the first time in as long as I can remember that I was just in tears. I think probably the first time Sarah saw me in tears,” he said.
Notably, Opar noted that the grief was witnessed by his family, including his children, and that he was unable to conceal his distress. He added that this was the first time his spouse had seen him in tears.
Opar said he withdrew from the family environment and spent several hours alone crying. He described the experience as prolonged grief, stating he could not understand why the tragedy occurred within his family.
Who is David Opar? Story Behind the Content Creator
David Opar was raised in Nairobi’s informal settlements and lost both parents at the age of 16. His elder brother, Evans Opar, assumed responsibility for the family, sacrificing personal ambitions to provide food, shelter, and support for the children’s education.
Despite being told he would not succeed in life, Opar excelled academically, graduating at the top of his undergraduate class at Kenyatta University and later at the top of his Master’s class at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a Distinction.

He later secured a full scholarship to Dongguk University in South Korea, where he completed a PhD in Nanochemistry in February 2021 after four years of study. He has described his upbringing as that of a “simple boy from Kendu Bay” who grew up in a slum before rising to become a PhD holder from a leading global institution.
After completing his studies, Opar built a research career in Scotland, where he published scientific work and contributed to development research. Following about four and a half years in professional research, he and his wife, Dr. Sarah Iqbal-Opar, agreed that he would leave formal employment to become a stay-at-home father to their two young sons.
His decision to quit was influenced by multiple personal and health-related factors, including a difficult experience at work, the death of his brother from pulmonary blood clots, and a prior near-fatal health emergency in which he experienced severe breathing difficulties and required hospital intervention after being assisted by a colleague.
