History of MPs in Kiharu
Since independence, Kiharu Constituency has produced several prominent politicians and leaders, some of whom have served in Kenya’s top decision-making bodies.
In 1963, Jesse Mwangi Gachago of KANU was elected to serve as the constituency’s first MP in post-independence Kenya (then Mbiri Constituency).
Mwangi was then succeeded by Julius Gikonyo Kiano, also of KANU, who held the seat through the 1966, 1969, and 1974 elections during the one-party system.
Kenneth Matiba was then elected to represent the constituency under KANU in the 1979, 1983, and 1988 elections, while Gidraph Mwangi Mweru won a 1990 by-election under the same system.
With the return of multi-party politics, Kenneth Matiba reclaimed the seat in 1992 under Ford-Asili, followed by Ignatius Ngenye Kariuki of Safina in 1997.
The early 2000s brought further shifts, with Kembi Gitura winning under NARC in 2002, and Barnabas Muturi Mwangi taking the seat on a Sisi Kwa Sisi party ticket in 2007.
In the 2010s, Irungu Kang’ata of TNA was elected in 2013. Kang’ata would later be succeeded by a youthful politician, Ndindi Nyoro, who won under the Jubilee Party in 2017.
Having endeared himself to the Kiharu electorate in his first term, Nyoro retained the seat in 2022 under the United Democratic Alliance.
In his numerous media interviews, Nyoro has been on record asserting that he won “without a single campaign poster”, a testament to his popularity.
His NG-CDF-led initiatives, including the Masomo Bora initiative and the revamping of public schools in the constituency, have placed him among the best-performing MPs in Kenya, a trend that has earned him accolades and admiration beyond Kiharu.
