A fresh twist has emerged in the widely circulated video showing a woman smashing a matatu windscreen in Nairobi’s Central Business District.
Central Police Station OCPD Philemon Nyokombo described the situation as a “fractious relationship,” noting that the dispute arose over child upkeep rather than a matatu fare or missing change.
The confrontation reportedly began when the woman demanded Ksh14,000 from the driver for school fees, but he could only provide Ksh10,000.
“The true story, the report that we have from both the lady and the man, is that they have a relationship. Husband, wife, it is a fractious relationship. They have a child whom they were to take care of. Now, when the lady came asking for upkeep for the child, they had a disagreement,” he said.
Woman Who Smashed Matatu Had Personal Dispute With Driver
The disagreement escalated moments before the matatu departed the Luthuli Avenue, when the woman allegedly smashed the vehicle’s windscreen with a stone.
According to footage, the driver and his associates confronted her after the incident, with the driver seen retrieving her handbag, which contained the Ksh 10,000 he had provided.
The matatu is currently held at the police station as investigations into the incident continue.

How Drama Unfolded
Earlier reports suggested that the incident occurred on Wednesday, March 11, when a woman smashed the windscreen of a matatu over an alleged dispute over KSh1,000 change on Luthuli Avenue in Nairobi.
According to witnesses, the woman handed the conductor KSh1,000 as fare and waited for her change as the matatu made its way to the CBD.
Upon arrival, the conductor was nowhere to be found, and the balance had not been returned. She later approached the driver to inquire about her money.
Despite her efforts, the driver dismissed her and reportedly told her to do “what she wanted,” prompting her to take matters into her own hands.

Frustrated, the woman reportedly grabbed a stone and smashed it against the windscreen before attempting to leave the scene.
Her escape was short-lived, as bystanders and nearby matatu conductors quickly intercepted her.
The incident sparked a flurry of reactions online. Some social media users supported the woman’s actions, while others argued that she could have handled the situation more appropriately.
Several Kenyans called on the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service (NPS) to take action against offenders.
Others criticized her for acting in anger and smashing the windscreen instead of lodging a formal complaint with the relevant matatu Sacco.
