Keeping a refrigerator clean requires more than just a quick wipe. It is recommended that you do a deep clean of your fridge every three to four months.
This process not only keeps your refrigerator clean and odour-free but also helps prolong the life of the appliance and the freshness of your food.
Spills, stains, and food residue can accumulate both inside and out, while overlooked leftovers can produce unpleasant odours every time the fridge door is opened.
Process of Cleaning Your Fridge
First, before you begin cleaning your fridge, start by removing all the contents, including food, beverages, and any removable shelves or drawers.
Place perishable items in a cooler with ice packs to maintain freshness while you clean. Further, discard any expired, spoiled foods, or unnecessary items.
Always allow the shelves and drawers to sit at room temperature before washing them to prevent cracking from sudden temperature changes.
Wash the removable parts with warm, soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and set them aside to dry.
While they dry, clean the interior of the refrigerator using a solution of baking soda and warm water, wiping down all surfaces, including walls, floor, ceiling, and the inside of the door. You may also prefer the use a cup of water, vinegar, and dish soap when cleaning.
Make sure to clean around seals, using a toothbrush if needed, especially around door gaskets where mold can accumulate.
After cleaning, dry all surfaces with a clean towel or micro-fibre cloth.
Once the interior is completely dry, replace the shelves and drawers, ensuring they are properly positioned.
Before returning items to the fridge, wipe down jars, bottles, and containers to avoid reintroducing any sticky spills.
Finally, clean the exterior of the refrigerator, paying close attention to handles and touchpoints, and use a stainless-steel cleaner if applicable for a polished finish.
