The United Kingdom’s immigration system is set to go fully digital, with the UK Embassy in Ghana confirming that from 25 February 2026, all visitors requiring a visa will be issued an eVisa only.
This move replaces the traditional visa vignettes, or stickers, previously affixed in passports, marking a significant shift in how UK immigration documentation is managed.
“The UK immigration system is going digital. From 25 February 2026, visitors to the UK who need a visa will get an eVisa only. eVisas replace visa vignette stickers in passports,” the embassy noted.
How to Access and Use Your UK eVisa
To access your UK eVisa, you must set up a UKVI account (UK Visas and Immigration account) if you do not have one.
Creating a UKVI account is free, and it allows you to securely access your eVisa anytime. There is no cost to set up the account or to view your eVisa.
Once your account is active, you can view your eVisa online. The eVisa serves as a digital record of your immigration status and can be used to prove your eligibility to work, study, or rent a home in the UK.
You can generate a share code from your account, which provides an official verification of your status for employers, landlords, or other authorities.
To travel to the UK, you must add your passport or travel document details to your eVisa. Once linked, your eVisa can be used for border verification without the need for physical visa stickers in your passport.
“You’ll usually get an eVisa when you successfully apply for a visa or other type of permission to be in the UK,” the department noted.

This makes travelling simpler and reduces the risk of losing or damaging important documents.
According to the UK Immigration portal statement, the eVisa system ensures that all visa-related information is stored digitally, providing a convenient and secure way to manage your immigration status.
With your eVisa, you can easily access your records, share proof of your status when required, and travel with confidence, knowing your visa information is securely online.
By following these steps: creating a UKVI account, viewing your eVisa, generating a share code, and linking your passport, you can efficiently access and use your eVisa for all official and travel purposes.

What is an eVisa
An eVisa is a digital record of:
- Your identity and immigration status – for example, the type of visa you have or if you have indefinite leave to remain (settlement) in the UK
- The conditions of your status – for example, if you’re allowed to work or study in the UK
eVisas are replacing physical immigration documents.
Biometric residence permits (BRPs) have already been replaced by eVisas. They will also replace:
- Biometric residence cards (BRCs)
- Wet ink stamps or vignettes (stickers) in passports
