Gideon Behar is the Ambassador of Israel to Kenya and the appointed Ambassador to Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, and Seychelles.
He is also Israel’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), two UN offices based in Nairobi.
Prior to his appointment as Ambassador to Kenya, Gideon Behar served as Israel’s special envoy for Climate Change and Sustainability, overseeing Israel’s climate foreign policy.
He also previously served as a diplomat with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1994, holding several posts, including ambassador to Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, and the Cape Verde Republic.
Gideon was a Special Envoy for African Affairs for the Head of the Bureau for Africa; Director of the Department for Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism, Deputy Director of the Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon Department, and Deputy Chief of Mission in Tunisia.

Gideon Behar was appointed the Ambassador of Israel to Kenya in August 2025
In 2017, he served as the Head of the Africa Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel.

Previously, he was Special Envoy for African Affairs and, in 2011, Director of the Department for Combating Antisemitism and Holocaust Remembrance.
From 2006 to 2011, he served as Ambassador to Senegal while concurrently serving as non-resident Ambassador to several West African nations.
Between 2002 and 2006, he was Deputy Director of the Jordan, Syrian, and Lebanese Department and also served in Tunisia as Deputy Head of Mission.
Family Background
He is married to Eke Avia Behar, and the couple has four children.
Gideon Behar speaks 8 languages, including English, French, German, Dutch, Arabic, Wolof (Senegal’s national language), and Hebrew. He is also studying Swahili.

He holds a Master of Arts in Islamic Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from the Hebrew University.
Achievements
During his term as Ambassador to Senegal, he received the Grand Officier de l’Ordre National du Lion and a special award from the NGO organization for his extensive humanitarian contributions to the country.
He has launched initiatives to transform Kenya into a regional hub by connecting Israeli private-sector innovators with the local market.
As Israel’s ambassador to Kenya, Gideon Behar has secured agreements to increase Israeli investment in Kenya’s geothermal sector to address the global climate crisis.
He supported the launch of the March for Israel Foundation, a faith-based humanitarian movement that empowers local Kenyan communities through people-to-people engagement.
