The Nairobi School (formerly The Prince of Wales School) is a premier national Secondary school located in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
The school’s origins date back to 1929, when on September 24, Sir Edward Grigg, then Governor of the Kenya Colony, laid the foundation stone for a school designed to accommodate 80 boys.
When it officially opened in 1931, the school admitted not only the 80 boarders it was built for but also enrolled 84 boarders and 20 day-scholars.
Over the years, the school has nurtured students who have gone on to hold influential positions in politics, law, governance, and public service.
Several prominent Kenyans who have studied at Nairobi High include veteran lawyer and former Member of Parliament, Gitobu Imanyara; Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi; Mr. Tim Rimbui; Shakeel Shabbir; and Nyamari Ongeiti (Nyashinski).
Prominent Kenyans Who Attended the Nairobi School
The Nairobi School has produced some of Kenya’s most influential and accomplished individuals across politics, business, sports, and public service.
Below are some of the prominent Kenyans who attended The Nairobi School and later rose to distinction in their respective fields.
Musalia Mudavadi
Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi attended Nairobi Primary School before joining Jamhuri for his O-Levels in 1974.
From 1978 to 1979, he attended Nairobi school for his A-Levels.
In 1984, he joined the University of Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Land Economics.
Mudavadi is a Registered Valuer and a Member of the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya.
In 2022, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in Peace and Sustainable Development by the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
Mudavadi is currently serving as the Prime Cabinet Secretary of Kenya and has, since 2023, served in an expanded role as the Foreign & Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary of Kenya.

Gitobu Imanyara
Veteran lawyer Gitobu Imanyara attended Nairobi school from 1968 to 1973.
In 1973, Gitobu served as a school prefect and the head of Scott House.
From 1974 to 1977, he attended the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Laws and the Kenya School of Law for one year.
In 1997, Gitobu vied for the MP seat in the Central Imenti constituency, where he won a landslide victory. While serving as an MP, he continued publishing his magazine, which had been renamed African Law Review.
He also served as the Secretary-General to the Forum for Restoration and Democracy (FORD) political party since 1992, prior to joining the August house in 1997 as an MP.
Shakeel Shabbir
Shakeel Shabbir went to the Nairobi School, where he graduated in 1971.
Shabbir then moved to Makerere University in Uganda but left after only one year of studies to join Middlesex Polytechnic in London, where he earned a Diploma in Accountancy.
He later pursued a bachelor’s degree in business studies at the same institution.
Shakeel Ahmed received the Master of Business Administration from Henley Management College and later pursued a master’s in political science at Maseno University.
Between July 2000 and 2002, he served as a Nominated Councillor on the Kisumu Municipal Council.
From 2008 to January 2013, he served in the Kenya National Assembly as a Member of Parliament for Kisumu Town East.
Since March 2013, Shabbir has served in the Kenya National Assembly as a Member of Parliament for Kisumu Town East.

Tim Rimbui
Tim Rimbui studied music at Nairobi School and later at St. Mary’s School, Nairobi.
He received training in music theory and recording at Wisseloord Studios and The Rock Academy in the Netherlands.
He leads the music production agency and record label Ennovator.
Nyamari Ongegu (Nyashinski)
Also known as Nyashinski, Nyamari Ongegu is a Kenyan rapper with over 10 years of experience in the industry.
He attended Nairobi School for his high school education.
After leaving High School, he undertook a bachelor’s degree in environmental planning and management.
During his time at Nairobi School, he met Collins Majale, alias Collo, and Robert Manyasa, alias Roba, and the three formed the Kleptomaniacs, a group that produced major hits in the early 2000s.
Nyamari is a Kenyan rapper with over 10 years of experience in the industry.
