A new twist has emerged in the alleged shooting of a driver of Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata after the National Police Service (NPS) disputed reports surrounding the incident.
In a press statement released on July 12, 2026, the NPS addressed incidents of violence that occurred in both Kisumu City and Nyahururu Town.
According to the police, the individual identified as Joseph Gitau was injured during a confrontation with law enforcement officers in Nyahururu.
Further, the police emphasized that the Governor’s driver sustained chest injuries and was treated and later discharged, confirming there was no shooting incident in Nyahururu.
“In Nyahururu Town, a group of individuals attempted to disrupt a political rally by throwing stones, causing minor injuries to several members of the public, including one Joseph Gitau, who sustained a chest injury and was treated and discharged. Contrary to some allegations, there was no shooting incident,” part of the statement read.

Kangata’s Report on Driver Shooting
According to Governor Kang’ata, his driver and bodyguard, identified as Gitau, was shot in the chest during the tour after their convoy came under attack.
“Today, we were first stoned by goons while we were at the AIPCA church, and my driver was injured after being shot in the chest by the police. It is so unfortunate. We came in peace, but what we got in return was being stoned,” Kang’ata stated during a press conference after the shooting.
Further, the governor noted that the injured bodyguard was rushed to hospital after sustaining a chest injury, with the extent of his injury remaining unknown, as the governor and his team were unsure of whether the bullet used to shoot the driver was a live or rubber bullet.
