The Widows’ Empowerment Program (WEP), implemented under the patronage of Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration, has made significant steps in transforming the lives of widows across Kenya.
Established to give hope and foster independence among widows who faced increased vulnerability in Kenya, the WEP has spearheaded a range of socio-economic activities to improve the lives of widows and their dependents across the country.
As of October 4, 2025, the program had engaged 377 groups of widows, with 22,620 widows benefiting from the program.
The program’s activities have reached counties including Homa Bay, Siaya, Kisumu, Migori, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Makueni, Bungoma, Embu, Vihiga, Isiolo, Machakos, and Uasin Gishu.
Key Initiatives and Support Provided
A wide range of interventions has been undertaken to improve the welfare of widows and their families. Through its housing drive, more than 26 widows received entirely constructed homes.
In addition, the program has supported learners by providing educational resources, including book donations to schools to support their studies.
The program also provides plastic chairs, house furniture, water tanks, seedlings, and mobility aids such as wheelchairs and crutches.
All 377 groups also received financial support to strengthen livelihoods and promote sustainability.
Widows’ Empowerment Program Beneficiaries
Nyanza region recorded the highest number of widows’ groups that benefited from the program. Kisumu County had a significant participation, especially in Kisumu East, Kisumu West, and Nyando constituencies, where 90 widow groups benefited from the program.
Similarly, in Homa Bay County, constituencies such as Karachuonyo, Kabondo Kasipul, and Ndhiwa hosted a total of 69 widow groups, making the county one of the program’s most active regions.

Transforming Lives and Fostering Resilience
The program has impacted 22,620 widows in the country, helping them rebuild lives with dignity, security, and hope.
In addition to the material support, the WEP has provided psychosocial counseling, skills training, and legal guidance to protect widows’ rights, promote self-reliance, and enhance emotional well-being.
University sponsorships are also provided to children from widows’ families. Currently, 601 needy students at Tom Mboya University are benefiting from the German Program initiative.
Under the leadership of Raymond Omollo and Program Director Victor Ayugi, the initiative continues to empower widows to achieve independence, strengthen families, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
