The United Kingdom, through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), has issued a security and travel advisory to its nationals ahead of the by-elections scheduled to take place in Kenya on November 27, 2025.
In a notice dated November 24, 2025, the FCDO warned British citizens to exercise caution during the election period.
“Kenya will hold by-elections in 24 constituencies across the country on 27 November. Protests and demonstrations are possible. Stay away from political rallies and related activities,” the advisory stated.
According to the advisory, protests, demonstrations, and strikes are common in Kenya, particularly in Nairobi, and often lead to traffic disruption and occasional violence.
UK Issues Security Advisory to Its Citizens
The FCDO noted that several demonstrators have been injured or killed in recent years and warned that the security situation can change rapidly, especially around key political dates, such as the anniversary of the Finance Bill protests that took place in June and July 2024.
The advisory urged British nationals to stay away from political gatherings and large crowds, monitor local media to track potential protest hotspots, and follow local news updates and instructions issued by Kenyan authorities closely.

In the event of security incidents such as bag-snatching, which is common in bus stations, railway stations, and airports, the FCDO urged British nationals to remain vigilant and follow any security advice given by their hotel, employer, or hosts. If attacked, they should not resist. The advisory also recommends avoiding carrying large sums of money or wearing expensive-looking jewellery or watches.
Aside from election-related concerns, the FCDO also warned its citizens that there is a heightened threat of terrorism across Kenya.
The advisory noted that attacks could target Westerners, including British nationals, and could occur at any time, particularly during religious events, public holidays, and major celebrations.
According to the notice, terrorist attacks are indiscriminate and may take place in locations frequented by foreigners, including tourists. These locations include, but are not limited to:
- hotels, bars, restaurants, and nightclubs
- sporting events
- supermarkets and shopping centres
- beaches
- safari parks
- commercial and government buildings
- places of worship
- diplomatic premises
The British government urged its citizens to remain vigilant in such areas. Those who regularly visit specific locations were advised to vary their timings and patterns of movement. Travelers were further encouraged to move during daylight hours whenever possible and pay close attention to security arrangements in buildings they enter, including bag checks, security personnel, and physical barriers.
