Following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in India, where he had been receiving treatment, reports emerged on social media suggesting that he was alone at the time of his demise and that no family members had accompanied him.
A viral video shared online showed Raila Odinga at a medical facility during his final moments before he collapsed and was rushed to Devamatha Hospital, where he succumbed to cardiac arrest. In the video, he was seen in the company of his bodyguard, Maurice Ogeta.
However, another video has since surfaced showing a Kenyan delegation led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, along with Mining CS Hassan Joho, Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, arriving in India to retrieve Odinga’s body.
Winnie and Ruth accompanied Raila Odinga to India
They were received in Mumbai by Raila’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, and his sister, Ruth Odinga, at around 2:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, confirming that members of his family were indeed present with him in India.
From the videos shared on social media, Winnie and Ruth Odinga were the only family members seen in India. Raila’s wife, Ida Odinga, remained in Kenya, where she had earlier assured the public that her husband was in good health after concerns were raised about his long absence from the public eye.

As Kenyans mourned the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, some social media users continued to claim that Raila was alone at the time of his death, with only his bodyguard, Maurice Ogeta, by his side. One user, Arap Tilingi, wrote:
“The fact that no member of Raila Odinga’s family was with him in India says a lot about the news surrounding his death.”
President William Ruto, while delivering an official proclamation following Odinga’s death, noted that Ida Odinga had initially expressed interest in joining the delegation traveling to India to retrieve her husband’s body.
Former Prime Minister Funeral Programme
However, images shared on social media showing various high-profile leaders, including Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, visiting the Odinga family at their Karen home confirmed that Ida was present in Kenya receiving condolences.
This suggests she may have changed her mind at the last minute.
