Kenyan politician Fredrick Okango has announced his resignation from the Kenya African National Union (KANU), where he served as Secretary of Political Affairs.
In a letter dated September 19, 2025, and addressed to KANU Secretary General George Gewa Wainaina, Okango stated that he was stepping down from both his position and party membership in accordance with the Political Parties Act, 2011, and the KANU Constitution.
The resignation was officially received by the Registrar of Political Parties on September 23, 2025.
“I hereby resign, with immediate effect, from the position of Secretary of Political Affairs and from membership of KANU, in line with the Political Parties Act, 2011, and the KANU Constitution,” read the statement.
Okango explained that his decision was driven by personal political growth and the changing dynamics of Kenya’s politics, which he described as being at a “crossroads” requiring bold choices and fresh leadership.
He further hinted at unveiling the next phase of his political journey in due course.
In the letter, he thanked KANU for the opportunity to serve, wishing the party success as it continues to play its role in Kenya’s democracy.
“I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served and contributed to KANU’s vision, and I wish the party well as it continues its role in Kenya’s democratic journey,” ended the letter.

Fredrick Okango Career
Okango has served as the Strategic Advisor to the Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs, a role he took up in November 2024.
Before his appointment, Okango had a distinguished career in political leadership and strategy.
From July 2021, he served as the Secretary for Political Affairs at the Kenya African National Union (KANU), where he oversaw the party’s strategic agenda, provided high-level representation, and acted as the official spokesperson.

Politics And Media
Additionally, between February 2022 and November 2024, he also worked with Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition, steering political programs, advocacy, and grassroots mobilization while maintaining the party’s media visibility.
Before that, Okango had been the Secretary General of Third Way Alliance Kenya (2015 – 2020), where he was responsible for managing the party’s administration, implementing policies, leading communication campaigns, and coordinating high-level engagements.
He was also the party’s accounting officer and a signatory to its accounts, in his role of governance and accountability.
Outside politics, Okango built his professional foundation in the media industry. Between 2013 and 2022, he served as a Group Business Manager at Nation Media Group.
During his tenure, he developed and executed business strategies that increased market share by 30%, boosted returns by 40%, and expanded media opportunities by 50%.
