I wear several hats across the world. It is about your digital footprint and how it can impact your possibilities of getting hired or landing a deal, a business deal, even. Thanks to our constitution, we now have the freedom to post what we like, as we wish. Or so, ‘you believe’.
However, I still regret my encounter with a few people I personally recruited for clients. Here is why.
Once or twice, I may have seen snide remarks on particular posts, penned by these candidates. I could tell their mindset by how their thought process was aligned under the posts. And if you ever worked with a psychologist or a teacher of English, they would tell you that the first answer is often the correct one.
Trust your gut and walk away if you do not trust an employee’s digital footprint. It is important to be mindful about what you share online because we live in the era of The Internet of Things (IoT).
As a Career Strategist, I would like to encourage you to create positive content online, even if, the storm rages and sadness engulfs us. I think that hiring the two employees must have been one of the rookiest mistakes I ever made in my life as a hiring manager.
Therefore, what are my key take aways? Please, employers, always watch employee’s digital footprints. The same applies to employees. With that said, this is what you can do to protect yourselves from malicious employees in our society because every organization has three types of people: The wise, The evil and The foolish.
Importance of Watching Your Digital Footprint
Security
Under security, focus on personal exposure as it includes the data you shall leave behind when using the internet. This includes social media posts, browsing history, and online transactions. Please manage this information carefully as it might lead to data exposure. You might then become vulnerable to identity theft and cybercrimes.
Data misuse
Companies will always track your online behavior to build profiles for their advertising needs. If you do not manage your data properly, you might end up on the wrong side of the law. Please feed the society with positive content.
Your Professional Reputation
As a career coach, I often ask my candidates, what is your WHY? A concept I picked from Simon Sinek, exploring your skills, the need to work for the particular company, and why we even need to delve into career coaching. So, before you post anything online, or why are you at work? Why do you need this job? Why are we working on the CV?
Employer Scrutiny: Many employers review candidates’ online presence before making hiring decisions. Negative or unprofessional content, such as inappropriate posts, comments, or photos, can damage your chances of landing a job or advancing in your career.
Networking Opportunities: A positive and professional online presence can enhance your career opportunities. Conversely, a poorly managed digital footprint can lead to missed opportunities or damaged relationships within your industry.

Permanent Record: Once something is posted online, it can be challenging to remove completely. Even if you delete a post, it may have been saved, shared, or archived elsewhere, potentially affecting you in the future.
Legal Implications: Your online activities can have legal consequences. For example, sharing copyrighted material without permission or making defamatory comments can lead to lawsuits or legal action against you.
Social Interactions and Relationships
Perception Management
Your online behavior influences how others perceive you, both personally and professionally. Controversial or insensitive posts can lead to misunderstandings or conflicts in your social and professional circles.
Cyberbullying and Harassment
Negative interactions online, whether intentional or not, can lead to cyberbullying or harassment. Managing your digital footprint helps you maintain positive relationships and avoid contributing to or becoming a victim of harmful online behavior.
Personal Branding
Building a Positive Image: In today’s digital age, your online presence is often the first impression people have of you. Curating your digital footprint allows you to build a positive personal brand that aligns with your values, goals, and professional aspirations.
Influence and Authority: For those looking to establish themselves as thought leaders or influencers in a particular field, a well-managed digital footprint is essential. It helps build credibility and authority in your area of expertise.
