Benjamin Cheboi Chesire is a Kenyan politician who is the first and current Governor of Baringo County.
Before entering politics, he served as the CEO of the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) and held other significant leadership roles in education.
He was first elected governor in 2013 on a URP ticket and regained the position in the 2022 elections under the UDA party.
Cheboi was born in 1958.

Benjamin Cheboi completed both his O-level and A-level studies at Kabarnet Boys High School and Friends School, Kamusinga.
He pursued undergraduate studies at the University of Nairobi, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Chemistry.
Later, he advanced his academic credentials with a master’s degree in Financing Higher Education from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom
Career life
Cheboi’s professional journey has been significantly rooted in higher education administration:
- He served as Acting Academic Registrar at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), overseeing academic administration.
- He then transitioned to the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), initially as Deputy Chief Executive Officer, before being promoted to Chief Executive Officer (CEO), a role he held approximately from 2000 to 2012.
- Beyond HELB, he held national-level leadership roles, including Commissioner at the Commission for Higher Education and Director at the Kenya Institute of Directors. He also served as the first President of the Association of African Higher Education Agencies (AAHEFA).
Benjamin Cheboi has been recognised with multiple awards for his contributions, including the prestigious Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS), the Presidential Award, a Kenya Communication Technology Award, and a World Bank Fellowship supporting his master’s studies.

In response to the 2010 constitutional change and devolution, Cheboi resigned from his role at HELB in September 2013 to contest for the Baringo governorship on the URP ticket. He won the election and was sworn in as the first Governor of Baringo County on 27 March 2013.
Although he lost in the 2017 primaries and subsequently the election, he made a successful political comeback in August 2022 under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) banner, reclaiming the gubernatorial seat.
He currently serves as Chairperson of the Security Committee within the Council of Governors, reinforcing his role in regional security oversight
