Former Kesses Member of Parliament (MP) Swarup Mishra is a medical doctor who made history by becoming the first non-local to win a parliamentary seat in the Rift Valley region in 2017.
Nicknamed after Mishra Kiprop Arap Chebet, the businessman was elected as the member of Parliament (MP) for Kesses Constituency, Uasin Gishu County after vying on a Jubilee ticket.
However, Mishra is more than a doctor than politician. He is a wealthy business mogul and a family man who loves living a comfortable and flamboyant life.
Additionally, he is soft spoken and is known for his ability to ignore his ego and apologize for all kinds of wrongs.
Despite his success as a politician and businessman, Mishra’s business empire has been experiencing significant financial struggles in recent past, resulting in huge losses for the billionaire.

Businesses and Wealth of Swarup Mishra
Mishra established his first hospital in 2005 in Eldoret town along the Nakuru -Eldoret highway. The success of the first hospital inspired him to open other branches in Kenya, Rwanda and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
By 2024, the properties under Mediheal Group Limited (Swarup Ranjan Mishra and Pallavi Jodhpur Rajsthan) included 0.9 hectares of land within Blossom, Kiambaa, in Kesses division and 10 acres within Ngeria centre.
Additionally, he owns 10 acres parcels of land in Chepkigen, 1.07 acres within Elgon view, Greenvale area, and another 1.086 within the same area.
The woes his hospitals are facing began late 2019 after Mishra was accused of using the establishments as a front for trafficking human body parts.
However, in January 2020, he made a statement to the media refuting claims of being in the business of trading in human body parts.
Also, he denied using Indian specialists at the hospital who were part of a larger conspiracy to traffic body parts.
On the other hand, at the beginning of 2024, services at his Mediheal hospital in Eldoret were paralyzed due to financial constraints.
Consequently, Jomuki Auctioneers lined up his various parcels of land for auction including his palatial Elgon View residence for auction on Tuesday in Eldoret town.
In His hospitals are facing auctions because of financial constraints and lack of salary payment. In his Nakuru branch hospital for instance, he owed salary arrears in the tune of Ksh53 million owed to 17 doctors and other staff.
The management of the hospital attributed the downfall of the facility to the withdrawal of medical cover by the government and the non-payment of NHIF funds by the State to the hospital without any reason.
On June 12, while acting on a court order, auctioneers towed ten vehicles including cars and a minibus belonging to Mishra’s Nakuru branch hospital. He was reported to have defaulted on paying Ksh53 million in pending salaries to 17 doctors.

House and Luxury Items
In a past TV interview, Mishra revealed that he lived a luxurious lifestyle detailing that he owned a fleet luxury vehicle, houses, high end watches and over 200 suits.
In addition, he said that he owned 18 phones. When asked how he managed to keep tabs on all of them, he said that it was not as difficult as it seemed likening it to having many wives.
While still deputy President, William Ruto attended the official housewarming of a mansion that Mishra had put up in Eldoret in October 2020.
He marveled at the house with high ceilings and window, admitting that it was one of a kind and he had never seen anything like it.
“I have been to many homes, but I have never been to one like this one. It is important to have a decent and good home. You have to appreciate that life is not a rehearsal, that you live once. This is a step in the right direction. It is only in a good home that you can bring up a good family and it is a good family that becomes the unit of a good nation.
“You have helped us make a big statement in Uasin Gishu. You will find a lot of us finding all manner of excuses to come in here, ” Ruto said while giving a speech at the event.
Political Career
After his stint as MP, Mishra launched a campaign in an attempt to fight for his political seat in Kasses.
In May 2022, he made headlines for breaking into tears during a campaign rally after receiving a warm welcome by the people of Kesses Constituency.
Ruto campaigned against Mishra in 2022, asking the people of Kesses to send him home together with the opposition leader Raila Odinga, who he supported at the time.
He lost the elections to Julius Ruto, who had the backing of William Ruto.
However, after Ruto won the presidential seat, he released an official statement apologizing to him in September 2022. According to him, he made the wrong decision to stand by the opposition, explaining that it was out of lack of wisdom.
“The wrong decision which I made. Sometimes the wrong decision can be made because of lack of wisdom,” he said.
Later on, May 17, 2023, he officially joined President William Ruto-led United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Mishra was received by UDA party Secretary-General Cleopas Malala at the party headquarters in Nairobi.
“I confess today, the mistake and the blunder I did…I made the wrong decision, wrong direction, wrong party and wrong people but today, God sent me where I belong with a lot of forgiveness and blessings,” he said.
