Joho, Oparanya & Mbadi Resign from ODM

Former Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, former Kakamega Wycliffe Oparanya and nominated MP John Mbadi have resigned from their leadership positions in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

In a statement on Wednesday, July 31, ODM said it had received resignations letters from the three-party leaders after their nomination as Cabinet Secretaries (CSs).

ODM Party leader Raila Odinga chaired a Central Management Committee (CMC) which received the leaders’ resignations and selected their replacments.

Oparanya and Joho were ODM deputy party leaders, Mbadi served as the party’s chairperson while Opiyo Wandayi was the National Assembly Minority leader and ODM Secretary Political Affairs.

“The party has received resignations of deputy party leaders Wycliffe Oparanya and Hassan Ali Joho as well as those of Chairman Hon. John Mbadi, Opiyo Wandayi- Secretary Political Affairs and Beatrice Askul – member of the National Elections Coordination Committee, all of whom have been nominated as CSs,” read the statement.

President William Ruto nominated Mbadi to the Ministry of National Treasury and Economic Planning and Oparanya to lead the Ministry of Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development.

James Opiyo Wandayi was named as designated CS in the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum while Hassan Joho to the ministry of Mining, Blue economy, Maritime Affairs.

ODM Replacements

ODM announced Suna East MP Junet Mohamed as the new minority leader and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo will assume the role of minority whip.

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi will be the Parliamentary Accounts Committee (PAC) chair, to be deputized by MP Wilberforce Oundo.

“CMC meeting resolved to propose Hon. Junet Mohamed for the position of Minority Leader, Hon. Millie Odhiambo-Minority Whip, Hon. Caleb Amisi-PAC Chairman, and Hon. Oundo Mudenyo-PAC Vice Chairman,” said the party in a statement.

Other Cabinet Nominees

Former Energy CS Davis Chirchir was nominated to the Roads and Transport docket, Deborah Mulongo Baraza was named CS for Health, and Alice Wahome retained her position as CS for Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development.

President Ruto appointed Stella Soi Lang’at as CS for Gender, Culture, Arts, and Heritage, Aden Duale as CS for Environment, and Soipan Tuya as Defence CS.

Salim Mvurya was reassigned to the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry, while Rebecca Miano, initially nominated as Attorney General, was transferred to the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife.

Former Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen was reassigned to the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports.

Dr. Alfred Mutua was reassigned to the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, with former AG Justin Muturi taking over as Public Service CS.

Julius Ogamba was nominated as Education CS, and Andrew Muhia Karanja as CS for Agriculture. Ruto also nominated Dorcas Agik Odour as Attorney General and Beatrice Askul Moe as CS for East African Community Affairs (EAC) & Regional Development.
