Kenyan youth have voiced strong opposition to the candidature of Raila Odinga in the upcoming elections of Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
A letter dated July 9, 2024, addressed to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, highlights concerns about Odinga’s suitability for the role.
The youth criticized Odinga’s track record, citing his consistent failure to advocate for policies and initiatives that empower young people.
“His lack of engagement and vision for youth development is alarming,” the statement reads, pointing out the crucial need for leadership that prioritizes the aspirations of Africa’s predominantly young population.
Raila Alliances with the Government
The letter further condemns Odinga’s recent political alliances, particularly with a government implicated in extrajudicial killings.
“Such associations cast a shadow over his commitment to human rights and justice,” the letter asserted, emphasizing that the African Union must be led by someone who upholds the highest standards of human rights and integrity.
Identifying themselves as Leaderless Gen Z, the anonymous authors called on the African Union to reconsider Odinga’s candidacy.

“It is imperative that the African Union is led by an individual who genuinely champions the interests of all Africans, particularly the youth,” they conclude.
Calls for Dialogue
This comes after President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga gave a way forward on the planned discussions with the youth protesting against the government.
Speaking on Tuesday, July 9, the leaders mentioned that the multi-sectoral engagement forum is on and urged the youth to submit the names of their representatives.
President Ruto stated that they agreed to bring the country together to address issues that are a priority for the people of Kenya.
He said the forum will now consist of 150 participants, 50 more than the number initially announced by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei.
Karua, Kalonzo differ with to Raila
Their united call for dialogue, however, sparked concerns from some Kenyans including key leaders in the Azimio la Umoja Coalition.
In a statement on Tuesday, July 9, NARC Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua emphasized the importance of political leaders not diverting the authentic demands for accountability and reforms coming from the youth.

Karua highlighted the necessity of sincere discussions that genuinely address the public’s interests.
“Dialogue can only be meaningful if the participants act in good faith and are motivated by the people’s best interests,” she stated.
“We must be cautious as political leaders not to co-opt the genuine demands for accountability and reforms from the younger generation,” part of her message read.
Additionally, Karua called on the government to promptly address the realistic demands of Gen Z, to enhance accountability and ensure that the government’s priorities align with the needs of the majority rather than a select few.
On his part, Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka said the Gen Z revolution cannot be wished away.
“Order Inspector General of Police Japeth Koome to resign and take responsibility for the deaths of the 42 young Kenyans who lost their lives because they were exercising their constitutional rights to peaceably assemble, demonstrate and picket,” said Kalonzo.
