President William Ruto and his administration remain under sharp focus barely two years after he took over as the country’s head of state. Opinion is divided on Ruto’s delivery, depending on who you ask.

However, Ruto is slowly finding favour within the opposition circles. A senator allied to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and the ODM party has described Ruto as the best pick for the top seat.

In a TV interview on Wednesday, October 9, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka stated that President Ruto was the best person to serve as the head of state

Onyonka said Ruto should be having vast experience to serve as president since he has served under the last three governments.

The Senator explained that Ruto was present during Late President Daniel Arap Moi before he worked with Late President Mwai Kibaki and later moved to deputize Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Given the fact that president Ruto is the one who has actually survived through President Moi, then he came in with Kibaki, he has been around with Uhuru and now he is the president.

I don’t understand how he finds this a difficult job. You can’t be through four presidencies, and you don’t pick what was their success and what was their failure,” he said.

Onyonka said Ruto is best choice for the presidency given his political experience and relationship with the previous head of states.

According to the Senator, the President has seen what political scandals do to a country, how Kenyans have fought over the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and what bad governance really means.

“Actually, there is nobody else who has been trained to be president better Ruto. For the fact that the experience, exposure and engagement politically. He has been part of the problem and part of the team that was supposed to solve the problem,” he said.

Advise to Ruto

Additionally, Onyonka said it becomes confusing is Ruto cannot engage with philosophy, ideology and show Kenyans that his government must deliver.

He affirmed that Ruto must make the right decisions to stabilize the country and leave legacy even if it means losing his he loses his friends

“What is it that is difficult, how can you allow state capture to take over all the state infrastructure. Its mind boggling,” Onyonka said.

Havi Comments on Broad Based Govt

Speaking during the same interview, former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Nelson Havi disagreed with those calling for the impeachment of President Ruto after Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua’s ouster.

However, he advised the president to intervene before Gachagua’s impeachment motion is tabled in Senate.

“I don’t agree that the president must go, he is the captain. When the ship is sinking, the captain will be the last person to leave,” he said.

Havi stated that Ruto made a wrong a decision by including Raila Odinga and his troops in the government.

He mentioned that some Members of Parliament (MPs) have said they will impeach President Ruto after Gachagua.

“Five MPs have said one at a time, I don’t think the invitation to bring Raila to the House was well intended. It will end badly,” he said.
