St. Therese Mbooni Girls High School is a national girls’ secondary school located on top of Mbooni hills in Makueni County. The school was established as a teachers’ training college for young women in 1960 then became a secondary school.
The ‘A’ level stream was phased out in 1989 following the nationwide shift to Kenya’s 8-4-4 education system. Since then, student admissions have been determined by performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams.
In 2023, KCPE was replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework. Mbooni Girls was elevated to a national school in 2011, admitting the first national class in 2012.
The school has consistently expanded in both size and academic performance, with a current enrolment of over 800 students.
Mbooni Girls High School consistently posts stellar results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and often ranks among the top 100 schools in the country. In the 2024 KCSE, the school presented 205 candidates for the examination.
