NTSA Update: How to Track Application of Driving License & Number Plates

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced service updates allowing clients to efficiently track the progress of driving license and number plates applications.

In a statement on Friday, the Authority asked Kenyans to visit its website to follow the progress of uncollected number plates while clarifying that public access to the portal does not require registration. 

After signing in to the NTSA portal, use your ID number to search Uncollected Smart Driving Licenses (DL) to track the progress of your application.

For updates on Uncollected Reflective Number Plates, the Portal provides information on the Location/Center where the Smart DL or Number Plate should be collected from.

In addition, the Portal has a platform to escalate concerns relating to Smart DL and Number Plate service applications.

Feedback to clients upon resolution of complaints/concerns is sent through the email addresses provided by the client at the point of submission via the portal.

How to Check for the Dl & Number Plates

Upon clicking on the NTSA website, the user is requested to click on uncollected DL and Plates then click on request follow up.

In the next step, users will be asked to choose between Number plates or Driving License depending on what they are looking for.

They will then be requested to provide their first name and second name, before giving their email account and the mobile phone number.

Lastly, they are asked to select their preferred pick-up centers, which include Huduma Centers and NTSA offices across the country, and to write a short message before submitting their requests.

The announcement comes after Auditor General Nancy Gathungu in July this year revealed large stocks of uncollected new generation number plates, vehicle logbooks and smart driving licences at the regional offices.

Gathungu stated those records reviewed from 10 regional offices showed stocks of 20,006 number plates, 17,474 logbooks and 5,753 smart driving licenses.

She said the records indicated that the stocks included expired licenses, while some logbooks had been in the authority’s custody for more than five years.

NTSA Introduces Smart Driving Licenses

NTSA introduced smart driving licenses in 2017 to replace the physical red book driving licenses.

The new smart driving license is a plastic card that fits into a wallet like a bank card and meets international standards for driver licensing and identification.

Also to note, the smart card license is processed online through the Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS), an interactive digital platform launched by the NTSA in 2016.

Until eight years ago, the licensing system was manual and involved a lot of paperwork. Prospective drivers were frustrated by the long and cumbersome process, which created opportunities for underhand dealings.
