How A Whatsapp Chat Helps Me Keep Money Working, Not Sitting Idle

By the time the month settles, many people realise the same thing, that money came in, bills were paid, and whatever was left simply sat there, waiting to be spent.

That is where most plans quietly fail, yet many people still do not know how to address them.

For people saving for school fees, emergencies, short‑term goals, or upcoming expenses, idle money is often used casually, long before it has a chance to grow into something useful.

This is the gap the Britam Money Market Fund is designed to fill.

Britam Money Market Fund gives that money a place to earn interest daily while staying accessible for school fees, emergencies, short‑term projects, or a business float.

And with the Britam Money Market Fund now available on WhatsApp, getting started no longer requires paperwork or office visits

What Britam Money Market Fund Is

When you invest in the Britam Money Market Fund, your money is pooled with funds from other investors.

This Britam Money Market Fund is a unit trust or collective investment scheme that invests in short-term money market instruments, including fixed deposit accounts, treasury bills, and treasury bonds.

These instruments earn interest daily.

That interest is added to your investment and compounds daily, so your money grows steadily without you having to actively manage it.

Unlike leaving money in a savings account that sits idle or is spent easily, the fund gives your money a clear job while keeping it accessible.

Who the Fund Is Designed For

The Britam Money Market Fund is designed for low-risk investors who want stability and flexibility.

It is suitable for people saving for school fees, rent, medical emergencies, travel, short-term personal projects, or a business cash float.

It also works well as an emergency fund because the money remains accessible when needed.

Anyone with a Kenyan national ID or passport and a KRA PIN can invest.

Minimum Investment and Costs

You can open a Britam Money Market Fund account with as little as Ksh1,000.

The minimum top-up amount is also Ksh1,000, making it accessible to ordinary earners.

There are no initial setup fees.

The fund charges an annual management fee of up to 2 percent per year, deducted from the returns.

Interest earned is also subject to a 15 percent withholding tax, as required by law.

A very major boost is that you get one free withdrawal per calendar month.

Any additional withdrawal within the same month is charged Ksh750 per transaction.

Access to Your Money

After opening an account, funds are not accessible during the first 14 days.

This applies only to the initial investment.

After that period, there is no lock-in, and you can withdraw your money at any time.

Withdrawals are processed within 24 to 48 business hours and paid directly to your M-Pesa or bank account.

Importantly, interest is not forfeited.

You can choose to withdraw only the interest earned or withdraw both the principal and interest.

How to Apply Through WhatsApp

Britam has made it possible to open and manage a Money Market Fund account entirely through WhatsApp, removing the need for paperwork, queues, or office visits.

WhatsApp is already used by most Kenyans daily, making it a familiar and simple way to start investing.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp and save the number 0705 100 100 to your contacts.

Step 2: Send a message saying “Hi” to 0705 100 100.

Step 3: You will receive an automated response. Select “Invest with Britam” from the menu.

Step 4: You will be prompted to enter your national ID number.

Step 5: Follow the prompts to open a new account. You will be asked to provide your KRA PIN, residential address, occupation, and how you were introduced to Britam, such as through a financial adviser.

Step 6: Accept the terms and conditions when prompted.

Step 7: You will receive a one-time password (OTP) via SMS. Enter the OTP to verify your account.

Step 8: Select the Britam Money Market Fund and enter the amount you want to invest. The minimum investment is Ksh1,000.

Once completed, you will receive a confirmation message from Britam.

After the initial 14-day period, you can top up, withdraw, or monitor your investment directly through the same WhatsApp conversation.

The entire process, from sending the first message to completing your investment, takes only a few minutes and can be done from anywhere.

Other Ways to Access the Fund

While WhatsApp is the primary channel for this campaign, Britam also offers alternative channels for investors who prefer other platforms.

You can use the MyBritam mobile app, available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, to open and manage your Money Market Fund account.

The fund is also accessible via USSD by dialing *778# on a Safaricom line, making it available even without internet access.

Investors can also use the Britam customer portal online to register, top up, or make withdrawals.

For support, customers can call or message 0705 100 100.
