The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 is underway in Morocco, featuring 24 of the continent’s best football teams, with the group stage running until December 31 and the knockout rounds starting on January 3
AFCON 2025’s format divides the 24 teams into six groups of 4.
Each team must play every nation in the group once, earning 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss.
The Knockout Stage Teams
At the end of the group stage, teams are ranked based on points, with goal difference and goals scored used as tiebreakers if necessary.
The top two teams from each group automatically progress to the knockout stage, providing 12 spots in the Round of 16.
The remaining four slots are filled by the best third-placed teams from the six groups. These teams are selected based on points first, then goal difference, and then goals scored at the group stage.
This means that even finishing third in a tough group can still provide a path to the knockout rounds.

Knockout Stage: Single-Elimination Drama
Once the 16 teams are confirmed, the knockout stage begins on January 3, 2026.
This stage is a single elimination format, meaning each match is a do-or-die affair. Winners progress, while losers are eliminated from the tournament.
Winners from the Round of 16 advance to the quarterfinals, where eight teams battle for a spot in the semifinals. At this stage, eight teams are still in the tournament. Four matches are held, and only four teams proceed to the next stage, which is the semifinals.
Two semifinals are held, and the winners in each semifinal proceed to the final, which will be held on January 18, 2026, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
The semifinals determine the two finalists, with the losing teams sometimes contesting a third-place playoff, depending on tournament rules. By this point, the stakes are incredibly high, and teams must be at their peak performance to reach the coveted final.
