The 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage has intensified as several teams have secured their spots for the round of 32, while others have been eliminated.
The tournament expanded to 48 teams for the first time, and FIFA introduced a new qualification system that gives more nations an opportunity to progress.
In previous tournaments, the 32 teams competing across the groups allowed the two top teams in each group to qualify for the round of 16.
The new 2026 format rewards the top 8 best-performing third-placed sides with a spot in the round of 32.
How Teams Qualify for the Round of 32 Under FIFA’s New Rules
The 2026 FIFA World Cup features 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four, with a total of 72 group matches.
Each team plays three group-stage matches, with the top two teams from each group automatically qualifying for the Round of 32, meaning 24 teams are now assured of advancing to the Round of 32.

The remaining eight places are filled by the best third-placed teams across all 12 groups, bringing the total number of teams in the knockout phase to 32.
According to FIFA, the ranking of third-placed teams is determined first by the number of points earned.
If teams are tied on points, goal difference is used to separate them. If they remain level, goals scored become the next deciding factor, followed by fair play records based on yellow and red cards.
Currently, all participating teams have played two matches, with one group match remaining.
